In Gortys, according to greek mythology, in the shadow of a plane tree Zeus met with Europe and from that moment the plane tree turned into evergreen. From their love affair were born Minos, the king of Knossos, Rhadamanthus and Sarpedon.
The region of Gortys in the fertile valley of Messara in south Crete where is located, is being surrounded by Psiloritis mountain range and Asterousia mountains. The fertile valley is being considered as a main parameter and an ideal condition for the rising and the cultural evolution of Gortys. The region was already inhabited from the Neolithic period (7000 BC). It gained a great deployment during the Minoan period (1600 BC - 1100 BC) and it reached its maximum development during the Roman times (1st century BC – 4th century BC). By the middle of the first millennium and the time after that (800/700 BC), Gortys increased its power, managed to overcome Faistos and it became a leading power in the region of Messara.
The city reached its heyday and also its maximum status and prestige and it gained important progress in all sectors of spiritual, political and financial life until its progressive weakening
